Intervene early with a dyslexia solution that identifies all the essential reading areas

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) has guidance about which specific reading skills to measure. These are derived from a strong research base about the reading deficits that are most likely to predict a manifestation of dyslexia. Phonological awareness

Identifying and manipulating the different parts of oral language, such as words and syllables. Examples: onset sound/alliteration awareness, rhyme awareness, word segmenting, and word blending.

Vocabulary and oral language

Knowing the meaning of words and using them accurately when speaking. Picture recognition, synonym recognition, and morphology skills can shed light on students’ vocabulary knowledge.

Phonics skills and decoding

Connecting the sounds of oral language with the letters of written language. Demonstrated through letter sound knowledge, word decoding, and encoding (spelling).

Oral reading fluency

Reading accurately with expression and at an appropriate pace. Progress toward oral reading fluency can be measured through automatic recognition of letter names and high frequency words (“sight words”), sentence reading, and passage reading.

Spelling/encoding

Recording the correct letters that match sounds in a word. Also called “encoding” because it is the inverse of decoding letters into words. A student’s attempt to spell a word reveals a great deal about their understanding of how letters represent sounds in printed language.

Rapid automatic naming (RAN)

Saying the correct names of a set of familiar objects, colors, letters, or numbers quickly and effortlessly. RAN contributes to phonological processing speed, which makes RAN tasks useful when screening for dyslexia.
