What’s new in Star CBM Reading this fall?
Renaissance Star CBM continues evolving to provide educators with additional data and critical insights to measure student performance and growth. We are excited to share the following updates available now, helping educators identify and monitor students’ foundational reading and math skill development, all in one place, Data Insights.
Historical extract/ Overall Risk Score
Last fall, we introduced the Overall Risk Score (ORS) in Star CBM Reading to support customers who must adhere to state-level reporting requirements. This score, included in Star CBM Data Insights as its own tile, as shown below, indicates which students in grades K–2 are considered at risk overall, if their composite score is below the 20th percentile.
This fall, the Overall Risk Score was added to the Historical Extract, making it easier for administrators to view and share pertinent information for state reporting purposes that helps inform decisions related to resource allocation. Historical extracts can be accessed through Data Insights link, as shown above, or by choosing Historical Extracts, as shown below.
Please note that, by default, the Overall Risk Score is “off.” To display the Overall Risk/Composite Score in Data Insights and the current year Historical Extract, the district preference must be enabled. Refer to the Help File to learn more about setting this preference.

RAN measures added to Star CBM Data Insights
Administrators and teachers use the Star CBM Data Insights tiles to get answers related to screening, progress, proficiency, and growth throughout the school year and over multiple years. Last fall, we added Sight & High-Frequency Words and Encoding measures to Star CBM Data Insights. This fall, Rapid Automatic Naming (RAN) measures are now included.
From the Data Insights tiles, as shown below, you’ll get an overall view of student performance on RAN measures related to Proficiency Rate, Participation Rate, and Percent Moving Up:
- Proficiency Rate shows the percentage of students whose scores are in the At/Above Benchmark category for Star CBM Reading and Star CBM Math or in the Satisfactory/Optimal category for Star CBM Lectura. It will include Rapid Automatic Naming measures now.
- Participation Rate includes the percentage of students who completed any assessment in the current screening window. It will include Rapid Automatic Naming Measures now.
- Percent Moving Up displays the percentage of students who have moved up from Intervention (for Star CBM Reading or Star CBM Math) or Alert (for Star CBM Lectura) in the previous screening window to a higher benchmark category in the current screening window. It will include Rapid Automatic Naming Measures now.
To get deeper insight into your class’s and an individual student’s performance and growth for each RAN measure, click “Explore the Data” on any of the above-mentioned tiles.
