As students’ testing environments may change throughout the school year, we realize that knowing where students tested may impact your interpretation of the data. We are committed to providing highly reliable and valid assessments.
Between March 17 – June 15, over 1,000,000 Star Assessments were administered remotely. In an effort to ensure the integrity of remote testing, we monitored the data closely—examining time spent testing, score distributions, score changes over time, and aggregate performance. We will continue to look for any indicators of unreliable or invalid test results as we compare fall 2020 data to prior years’ data.
Also, when we saw some unexpectedly high spring performance in the earliest grade levels, suggesting parents may have “helped” students, we addressed this issue with new documentation for administrators, teachers, and parents. Supporting your ability to test remotely is our highest priority, and we will continue to closely monitor and address any issues that arise.
Later this fall, you’ll be able to see reporting showing if a test was taken at school or in an alternative location. With this added feature, you’ll be able to report on how students were tested and consider any adjustments to your remote testing and communication plans.

In this webinar, the assessment director at an online education provider who has used Star Assessments in a remote learning environment for many years shares tips you can apply to get the most out of the testing experience. You’ll get a clear understanding of the “do’s” and “don’ts” of remote testing, along with insights on:
- When to schedule remote testing administrations
- How to ensure a proper testing environment
- How to monitor students as they test
- When to allow testing accommodations
While remote administration is not new to Star Assessments, we recognize how important it’s become for even more schools as they deal with school closures amid the pandemic. Remote administration is just one more way Star Assessments continue to deliver the student assessment data you’ve come to rely on.
